Bruno Bettelheim (1903-1990) aborda en
este libro, sin duda el más importante del célebre psicólogo y
psiquiatra infantil, el estudio de los cuentos de hadas y su influencia
sobre la educación de los niños. Para ello, examina los cuentos más
conocidos de la cultura occidental: Caperucita Roja, Cenicienta,
Blancanieves, Hansel y Gretel, etc., y pone de relieve su función
liberadora y formativa para la mentalidad infantil. «Todo cuento de
hadas —dice Bettelheim— es un espejo mágico que refleja algunos aspectos
de nuestro mundo interno y de las etapas necesarias para pasar de la
inmadurez a la madurez total. Para aquellos que se sienten implicados en
lo que el cuento de hadas nos transmite, éste puede parecer un estanque
tranquilo y profundo que a simple vista refleja tan sólo nuestra propia
imagen, pero detrás de ella podemos descubrir las tensiones internas de
nuestro espíritu, es decir, sus aspectos más ocultos y el modo en que
logramos la paz con nosotros mismos y con el mundo externo, que es la
recompensa que recibimos por todas nuestras luchas y esfuerzos». Así, al
identificarse con los distintos personajes de los cuentos, los niños
comienzan a experimentar por ellos mismos sentimientos de justicia,
fidelidad, amor, valentía, no como lecciones impuestas, sino como
descubrimiento, como parte orgánica de la aventura de vivir. El doctor
Bettelheim nos invita a redescubrir los cuentos de hadas como fuente
inestimable de placer estético y de apoyo moral y emocional para la
niñez.
